Tyre Troughs

Introducing Tyre Troughs

We’re thrilled to be the first authorised Australian dealer of Tyre Troughs—innovative and ultra‑durable water troughs crafted from repurposed off‑the‑road (OTR) mining tyres. Engineered to stand up to extreme temperature variations, livestock impacts, and even heavy machinery, these troughs offer unmatched longevity and reliability. Not only are they cost‑effective, but they also support environmentally responsible recycling by transforming what would be waste tyres into a highly functional resource. At Dusty & Rusty, we’re passionate about introducing Australian farmers and property owners to this smart, sustainable solution for all their livestock watering needs.

The History of Tyre Troughs

The concept of Tyre Troughs was born in the early 1980s from the ingenuity of a Wyoming rancher named Gerald Mahoney. Frustrated by the short lifespan and replacements of traditional water troughs, he discovered that cutting away the sidewall of a massive scrap mining tyre created an unbelievably sturdy and freeze‑resistant trough. After painstaking experimentation—and the creation of a custom cutting machine—he began producing these troughs for himself and neighbours. What started as a part‑time ranch endeavour grew into a family‑run business. In 2002, Pat and Beth Reilly purchased and incorporated the business, which now proudly supports around 140 dealers across the U.S. and even Brazil. Through mobile cutting units, they transform between 4,000–5,000 OTR tyres per year into these indestructible, eco‑friendly water troughs—all while partnering with mines, recyclers, and manufacturers to improve tyre disposal in a responsible, efficient model.
