Millets are fast-growing grasses that have been grown for food for thousands of years. The word "millet" refers to different types of grass crops whose seeds are used for human food, animal feed, or birdseed. In China, foxtail and proso millet have been grown since around 2000 BC. Millets are high in carbohydrates and low in fibre. Since they are quite similar in nutrition, they can be swapped in and out of birdseed mixes.

Proso millet (Panicum milliaceum L.), also called White French Millet in Australia, is grown in countries like China, India, the US, and parts of Europe.

Barnyard or Japanese millet (Echinochloa frumentaceae L.) is related to barnyard grass and is grown in Australia, Japan, and other Asian countries. It can be used for both grazing and grain. In Queensland, cattle farmers often graze it a few times before letting it grow out for harvest.

A common variety is Shirohie, a white-seeded type grown in northern Victoria near the Murray River. We prefer using regular Japanese millet in our mixes because its green-grey colour looks more attractive. Shirohie has a white-grey colour that can make the mix look too plain.
